What is Batik?

Some people say that the word batik originates from Javanese word "amba" and "tik", the meaning is writing/painting points or dots. Some other people also say that the word batik is actually from Javanese word "titik" that is given the prefix "mba". So, batik means job of making dots/points.

Batik is actually a technique to restraint color on a cloth by using wax. This technique is actually an ancient technique that was already existed thousands of years ago and can be found in the entire world civilizations.

In several countries, the medium that is used to restraint color is of various kinds. Some people use porridge made from root of cassava and even some others use porridge made from rice that is dried.

In Indonesia, and especially in Java, "canting" (heated copper pot with spout) is used to apply the wax on the surface of cloth. This has made the motif of indonesian batik so rich in detail.

Batik is also called a work of art, that is a form of expression of beauty from the inner side of human. The most important value that has made batik differs from other kinds of art is the depth of its meaning. Every element of batik has its own philosophy. Symbol from various  meanings. A picture of lifes in universe. Skill, ability and accuracy are very much needed in painting motif and followed by nobility and humility. Even several batik makers do abstinence before painting batik.


There are about 3000 kinds of batik design that have been created. The various designs are broadly made as symbols that have strong relation to the society's way of life and can not be separated from the rule and order related to the life cycle of society.
